Daoist Neidan

A Brief Introduction

The Daoist tradition originated in China over two and a half thousand years ago. Contained within it is a process of physical, energetic and mental development that is known as internal alchemy (neidan, 內丹). Daoist neidan cultivates health and well-being, whilst also being a form of philosophical and spiritual cultivation.

全心在中, 不可蔽匿。
知於形容, 見於膚色。

"A complete heart-mind at the centre cannot be concealed or hidden. It will be known through your appearance and seen in the colour of your skin."

— The Neiye (4th century BCE)

The Nüwa's System:

  • Musculoskeletal Restructuring & Retraining Movement

Opening, strengthening and connecting together the physical body is the foundation for effective neigong practice. This is a technical process rooted in Daoist nourishing life traditions, traditional Chinese medicine and the Chinese internal martial arts.

  • Building the Dantian & Opening the Channels

Daoist energetic practice centres around activating, filling and compressing an energetic centre within the lower abdomen, called the lower dantian. This increases the total amount of vital energy within the body, whilst also opening the channels through which blood and vital energy flow around the body.

  • Cultivation of Mind & Spirit

Development of the physical body and energetic system is a foundation for the cultivation of mind and spirit. Daoist meditation centres around the cultivation of release, which takes a practitioner towards naturalness and simplicity, and towards stillness and clarity. Beyond this, release-based meditation is the mechanism through which a practitioner is said to come into alignment with reality and achieve union with the Dao.

Textual Study

Study of Daoist Philosophical & Spiritual Classics

Alongside a structured syllabus of neigong methods, the Nüwa also offers a program of Daoist textual study. Study of the Daoist philosophical and spiritual classics informs and inspires practice, whilst providing students with a direct link to the teachings of past masters.

Most of the texts and commentaries that the Nüwa offers are translated in house, some of which have not been translated in English before. Explanatory notes are also provided to ease understanding.

靜坐少思寡慾,
冥心養氣存神,
此是修真要訣。

“Sitting in stillness with few thoughts and desires, concentrate the heart-mind, nourish the qi, and gather the spirit. This is the key to cultivating perfection.”

— Chart of Seated Meditation 坐禪圖 (late 17th century CE)
